What do you read?
Last Saturday I was at a book signing with three other authors (Shelley Bradley, Kate Lyon and Lorraine Heath) and we were talking to readers in the store. Several of them said they don't read romance and of course didn't stop at our table. It made me wonder what do these women read.
I love romance and always pick up one of my old favorite titles when I'm need a comfort read. But I do also read outside the genre--Nelson Demille, Nick Hornby, Margaret Atwood.
If you are reading here at the Desire Authors site, I'm guessing you already read romance. Do you also read outside the genre? If so, what do you read?

OHMYGOSH! There's Kate who is in my RWA chapter!
I read mostly romance these days. Once I discovered it a few years back I just can't get enough of it. Occasionally I do read something else. Author Homer Hickam (who wrote the book "Rocket Boys" upon which the movie "October Sky" is based) lives in my town and I enjoy reading his books. I'm wanting to read "The DaVinci Code" before the movie comes out in May.
I used to read a lot of Stephen King until "The Shining" scared me sleepless one night. And I read Robert Ludlum and Sidney Sheldon too. I got away from those when my boys were born. I guess I traded Robert and Sidney for Richard Scarry and Dr. Seuss. *g* Now I'm reclaiming time for myself to read and try to write.

Marilyn--Kate is so nice and sweet and I really enjoyed doing the booksigning with her!
I'm going to try to read the DaVinci Code before the movie too! I watched a fascinating special on Discovery channel this weekend that was about the Knights Templar.
I've never read Sidney Sheldon or Robert Ludlum but I might pick them up. I can't read Stephen King because I don't like to be scared!!!

You'll really like the DaVinci Code. And it's good to read it before you see the movie. BTW--Tom Hanks is perfect in the role, I think. See what you think after you read the story. I usually don't read outside of romance too much, and mysteries and thrillers scare me too, especially if I read them before bedtime. But I read all kinds of romance that have suspense and mystery in them, as well as quirky, fun books. I love Janet Evanovich.

Marilyn, I love all the old Sidney Sheldon and Robert Ludlums! Have you read anything by Harlan Coben? I've read a few of his latest and really liked them. Michael Chrichton's backlist is good, too, but I couldn't get in to his latest one about global warming. I think because there was no central character to identify with.
I have a lot of weird stuff on my TBR pile. Books about screenwriting, biographies of Clark Gable and Sidney Sheldon, a book about how to be a villain (can't wait to read that one!), and lots of romance, of course!

If it's in print, I'll read it, especially the Cheerios box at 6:12 am. *smile*
I go on reading jags--chick lits, romances, spy thrillers, mysteries. I'm all for engaging characters and a well-told story. Smart stuff (intelligent writing and subject matter) makes me especially happy. My third-grade son and I are loving Harry Potter (he's finishing Goblet of Fire and I'm salivating for Book 7 already!). I live in a book-crazy family.
I'd agree that a romance is the best escape possible, especially if you're trapped in standardized testing hell, like I am this week!

Oh man, I forgot about Janet Evanovich. My sister and I try to see who's the first to read each new Stephanie Plum book and we spent a girl's trip to Nashville casting the movie version of the books. *giggle*
I remember reading Andromeda Strain by Crichton and also Coma by Robin Cook. Also The Stepford Wives and The Boys from Brazil by Ira Levin, who also wrote Rosemary's Baby. When we lived overseas I read tons of Agatha Christie's Poirot and Miss Marple books. And there was Judith Krantz and Belva Plain, though they might be counted as romances. Can't remember too much about them, but I think some had a happy ending. *g* The memory is the first thing to go, you know.
